Finding Purpose and Identity in A New Season
I Woke Up at 50 and Didn’t Recognize Myself: Finding Purpose and Identity in a New Season
There’s something nobody really prepares you for as a woman stepping into your 50s.
The house gets quieter.
The roles begin to shift.
And somewhere between raising kids, showing up for everyone you love, building a home, and carrying all the things… you wake up one day and realize:
You’re not exactly sure who you are anymore.
That was me.
When I turned 50, I expected to feel settled.
I thought I would feel confident in this season… like I had already figured out who I was and what this next chapter was supposed to look like.
But if I’m honest?
I felt disconnected.
Not broken.
Not ungrateful.
Not depressed.
Just… different.
Like life had changed around me, and I was standing in the middle of it wondering:
What now?
Feeling Lost After 50 Is More Common Than You Think
If you’re a woman over 50 and feeling lost, I want you to know something:
You are not alone.
So many women step into this season and quietly wrestle with questions like:
Who am I outside of being a mom?
What does purpose look like now?
How do I care for my family and still care for myself?
Why do I feel disconnected from the woman I used to be?
What is God calling me into in this season?
These questions can feel uncomfortable.
Sometimes even scary.
Because for years we’ve been needed.
We’ve had routines and responsibilities and people depending on us.
And then suddenly the pace shifts.
The house feels quieter.
And we’re left with space we haven’t had in a long time.
Space can feel beautiful.
But it can also feel unfamiliar.
The Moment I Started Asking Different Questions
For a while, I kept waiting to feel ready.
Ready to know what I wanted.
Ready to feel confident.
Ready to figure out this next chapter.
But eventually I realized something:
I wasn’t going to stumble into clarity.
I had to get honest with myself.
So I started asking the hard questions:
What do I really want the rest of my life to look like?
How do I want to serve my family in this season?
How do I want to serve others?
How do I stay true to who God created me to be?
And slowly…
God began answering.
Not all at once.
Not with a giant flashing sign.
But little by little.
In quiet moments.
Through prayer.
Through truth.
Through letting go of old expectations.
Rediscovering Identity After Motherhood and the Empty Nest Years
Here’s what I learned:
I wasn’t trying to become someone brand new.
I was remembering.
Remembering who God created me to be.
Remembering what matters.
Remembering that my purpose didn’t end because my season changed.
And maybe that’s what you need to hear too.
If you’re walking through empty nest emotions…
If your role in motherhood feels different…
If you’re wondering where you fit now…
God has not forgotten you.
This chapter matters.
Your life still carries purpose.
Your voice still matters.
Your presence still matters.
And your identity was never tied only to what you did for everyone else.
It has always been rooted in who you are in Christ.
What God Says About This New Season
One of the scriptures that has anchored me is Isaiah 43:19:
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
A new thing.
Not the end.
Not losing yourself.
Not fading into the background.
A new beginning.
A fresh invitation.
A new season with purpose.
Sometimes we think getting older means closing doors.
But I’m learning that God often opens beautiful new ones.
And sometimes He lets life get quiet enough for us to hear Him clearly.
If You’re Feeling Lost Right Now

And you are not finished.
This season may feel unfamiliar.
But unfamiliar doesn’t mean wrong.
It might actually be the beginning of something beautiful.
The chapter where you reconnect with yourself.
The chapter where your faith deepens.
The chapter where you stop performing and start living with peace and purpose.
The chapter where you remember:
God still has a plan for your life.
And maybe…
just maybe…
the best part of your story is still being written.
